ENA members rely on what is essentially second party assessment by a panel of expert switchgear engineers - the Switchgear Assessment Panel (SAP) - largely made up of representatives from the Distribution Network Operators (DNOs).

For equipment assessment a project leader from one of the DNOs (or National Grid for 145kV equipment), supported by a second supporting engineer from a another DNO, pursues the assessment on behalf of all of the others. The work is co-ordinated through the Energy Networks Association, which awards a ‘Notice of Conformity Certificate’ to the manufacturer on successful completion of the process. The ENA and thereafter maintains a master list of approved and assessed equipment.

The SAP can assist companies comply with their duties and obligations under legislation and EU Directives.
